At the heart of this project is a simple goal: to reduce barriers to participation and create community spaces that are inclusive, well-used and responsive to local needs.
Formerly known as Victoria Sport and Recreation Hub, Tūranga Tauhinu Sports Hub was established through a shared vision to strengthen sport and recreation across Tairāwhiti. Recognising the opportunity to work collectively, local sporting and community organisations came together to improve sporting infrastructure and create a stronger, more connected future for sport and recreation in our region. The key to this was more effective governance and sustainable, accessible sporting infrastructure.
One of the unique features of the development is its ability to accommodate four different sporting codes within one shared court space. This required some clever thinking around design and equipment to ensure the facility could be flexible, functional and easily adapted to meet the needs of different users.
The equipment purchased from Mayfield Sports has played an important role in making this possible. The innovative swinging basketball tower allows the basketball hoops to be moved out of the way when not in use, while mobile tennis nets and netball hoops enable the space to be quickly reconfigured for different sports. This flexibility means we can maximise the use of our facilities, accommodate different sporting codes and create more opportunities for people in our community to get involved.
“Clever court design and adaptable equipment are helping Tūranga Tauhinu Sports Hub bring four sporting codes together in one shared space – creating more opportunities for the Tairāwhiti community to get active and connect.”
Since its development, Tūranga Tauhinu Sports Hub has continued to grow through collaboration, shared vision and a commitment to creating better opportunities for sport and recreation in Tairāwhiti. It is becoming an important sporting destination for our region, providing quality facilities that encourage participation, connection and active communities.
We are proud of what has been achieved so far and excited about what the future holds as we continue to develop a space that brings people, sports and communities together.
